Labiaplasty
The goal of labiaplasty surgery is to reshape the labia minora, or the inner skin that covers the female vaginal opening. Some women have disproportionately large or hanging labia on one or both sides. This may the result of aging or childbirth. This condition can interfere with physical intimacy, making is uncomfortable. Patients may have pain when engaging in activities such as horseback riding or riding a bike. We have had patients tell us that they avoid certain types of clothes or feel like they cannot wear bathing suits, which can be embarrassing. For these patients, labiaplasty surgery can help make the inner labia more proportionate.*

What the Surgery Will Be Like
Labiaplasty is typically performed in an outpatient setting where you will get to go home the same day. The procedure can be performed in the office or in an outpatient surgery center. Numbing medication (local anesthesia) is injected into the excess skin and tissue. The extra labia minora tissue is then removed and the area reshaped. Absorbable sutures are used and soft gauze is placed over the incisions. This surgery takes approximately 1 to 2 hours.
Recovery
Patients commonly will have mild discomfort and swelling for the first 1-2 weeks. There may be some decreased sensation at first, which usually resolves and returns to normal within months. Labial scars typically heal well, are rarely noticeable, and soften up over the next few months.* Patients should avoid intercourse or injury to the area until after 4 to 6 weeks to allow strengthening of the area.
