Inverted Nipple Surgery
Inverted nipples can be a source of embarrassment for some men and women. Instead of pointing out, these nipples are retracted into the breast and appear almost hidden. Inverted nipple correction can fix this condition.
Dr. Wong will perform a medical examination and discuss your concerns with you. She will work with you in planning the timing of this procedure as it can affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed in the future. So if you are planning to breastfeed, it might be a good day to postpone this procedure until you are done completing your family.
What the Surgery Will Be Like
Once Dr. Wong determines that you are a good candidate for this procedure, the expected recovery and potential risks are reviewed with you. Surgical planning photographs will be taken.
Inverted nipple correction is typically performed in an outpatient setting where you will get to go home the same day. The procedure is performed in the office under sterile conditions. A bolster and soft gauze dressings will be placed around the nipple to encourage healing in its new outward-pointing position and avoid recurrence of the inversion. This procedure takes approximately 1 hour.
Dr. Wong will see you within the first week of surgery. One or 2 more additional visits may be necessary to ensure appropriate healing. Patients commonly will have mild discomfort and swelling for the first few weeks. Patients can usually return to work the same week, depending on how strenuous their occupation is. There may be some decreased sensation at first, which usually resolves and returns to normal within months.
